As we decorated the tree, I realized with an oddly easy acceptance that I was willing to do whatever it took to spend the rest of my life making Kota as happy as he was when stringing garland around a pine tree.

It didn’t make any sense. Outside of spending three days laughing with him and knowing him intimately, there was no reason we should have worked together. But we did and it felt so right. I’d gone from a man who rolled my eyes and scoffed when others spoke of finding their soulmates and knowing within minutes they wanted to spend the rest of their life with that person, to being a man swamped in a mixture of disbelief and certainty that Kota was my person.

“Ohhh, look at these,” Kota exclaimed as he took delicate glass icicles from a box of ornaments. “Do you think the tree has too much already?”

I stood back and studied the tree, my arms crossed over my chest. “No, those are tiny, they won’t be too much. Go for it.” Honestly, I would have gone and chopped down another tree in a heartbeat if Kota had wanted to decorate more.

With what should have been a gaudy and exorbitant amount of Christmas décor on the tree and around the house, we tidied up and packed away boxes for whenever we decided to take the decorations down.

“Go ahead,” Kota said, pointing at the Christmas cactus, “try to tell me you don’t believe in the power of love and Christmas magic.”

The plant had transformed from nearly dead to perky, green, pink, and gorgeous. And I’d done absolutely nothing aside from bringing Kota into my home and falling for him.

Was what we had love?

I wanted to scoff and protest that I was too old and that ship had sailed. But my heart beat differently around Kota and I couldn’t be so sure. Maybe what we had was love and I was just slow to recognize it because I’d never experienced anything like it.

Was Christmas magic in the air?

I thought about how much had changed since the moment I found Kota in the ditch—the plant, the warmth in my heart, the feeling that everything was right, the sparkle in Kota’s eyes, the hopeful happiness in his smile.

Maybe the magic was yet one more thing I couldn’t explain and would never fully understand, but I had to admit there was definitely something at play.

“Fine. Thank you, Christmas magic, for bringing my plant back from the brink of death.” I huffed and gestured toward the plant, biting back a smile.

Kota grinned and wrapped his arms around me. “Thank you, Christmas magic, for careening my car into an icy ditch and stranding me with a hot-as-sin, sexy man with only one bed.”

I snorted. “We’ll have to thank Mary Joy for that.”

Kota rolled his eyes. “No, let’s not give her any fodder for her meddling.”

We bundled up and made our way through the snow to the garage where I got the ATV started and let it warm up for a bit while I grabbed a shovel and made a path back to the porch.
